why do we carry out fitness tests?
to identify
strengths/ weaknesses
in performance
to inform your
training requirements
so you know where you need to improve
to show a
base/ starting fitness level
to monitor
improvements
to gauge the
success
of a training programme
to compare yourself to
averages
to
motivate/ set goals
to provide variety in a training programme
limitations of fitness testing
tests are often
not
sport specific and too general
they do not replicate the
specific
movements of activities
they do not replicate the one off
competitive
conditions required in sports
many of these tests have questionable
reliability
eg, participants not always pushing maximally and mistakes easily made when measuring scores
the tests must be carried out with the
correct
procedures
and protocols otherwise scores will not be accurate or valid
