  • why do we carry out fitness tests?
    • to identify strengths/ weaknesses in performance
    • to inform your training requirements so you know where you need to improve
    • to show a base/ starting fitness level
    • to monitor improvements
    • to gauge the success of a training programme
    • to compare yourself to averages
    • to motivate/ set goals
    • to provide variety in a training programme
  • limitations of fitness testing
    • tests are often not sport specific and too general
    • they do not replicate the specific movements of activities
    • they do not replicate the one off competitive conditions required in sports
    • many of these tests have questionable reliability eg, participants not always pushing maximally and mistakes easily made when measuring scores
    • the tests must be carried out with the correct procedures and protocols otherwise scores will not be accurate or valid
