    • predisposition - the possibility that you will develop a certain condition. A genetic predisposition means that you'll inherit that possibility from one or both biological parents

      Dominant gene
      • needs only to be passed on by one parent for the child to develop a condition
      • eg brittles bones disease and Huntington’s disease
      Recessive gene 
      • must be passed on from both parents for the child to develop the condition. 
      • eg cystic fibrosis, PKU, Duchenne muscular dystrophy.
    • Genetic conditions affecting development - 
      1. brittle bones disease may cause frequent fractures and may limit social interaction
      2. PKU may cause learning disabilities
      3. sickle cell can impact attendance at school and intellectual development
      4. Huntington‘s disease - affects gait
    • foetal alcohol syndrome - caused by exposure to alcohol in the womb
      symptoms:
      •   small head circumference
      • neurological problems
      •   developmental delay
      effects of poor lifestyle choices during pregnancy 
      • low birth weight
      • premature birth
      •   developmental delay
    • Inherited diseases affecting development
      1. muscular dystrophy causes the muscles to weaken over time
      2.   down's syndrome affects a child’s normal physical development / linked to learning disabilities
      3.   cystic fibrosis causes the lungs and the digestive system to become clogged with mucus
      4. lynch syndrome causes an increased risk of developing certain cancers, womb + bowel cancers
    • lifestyle during pregnancy
      • a poor diet can lead to health problems such as obesity for the baby
