  • involves deliberately misleading or lying to participants about the nature of the study or an aspect of the study

    may sometime be necessary to deceive participant on full aim otherwise they may alter behaviour and make study meaningless. however if deceived, cannot give informed consent and may agree without knowing what they let themselves in for
  • certain situations can be identified where deception is acceptable, e.g. when deception is minor or where there is no potential harm, however, cost benefit decisions can be flawed because they involve subjective judgement and the costs or the benefits are not always apparent until after study
