  • all participants have right to privacy, researchers should not invade participants life and participants should have control as to what info is obtained by a researcher
  • participants do not need to be asked for consent to be observed unless the situation is one where they wouldn't usually be observed by a stranger. researchers should respect cultural values and not intrude a person who, while in public space, would not expect to be observed
  • Issue for researcher
    it might be difficult to avoid invasion of privacy when studying participants without their awareness
  • Overcome the issue
    researcher should not study anyone without their valid consent unless it's in public place/public behaviour. however not universal agreement to what counts as public place
