McGinnie's study

Cards (4)

  • Aim
To study the effects of emotion on perception
  • Method
16 student participants (8 female, 8 male). Participants watched a series of words flash onto a screen. Pleasant/neutral words and taboo words. Each participants were asked to say the word aloud. Each participant was attached to a Galvanic skin response detector
  • Results
The participant took longer to recognise and say aloud the taboo words than they did the neutral/pleasant words
  • Conclusion
That participants defence prevented the participants from perceiving the taboo words quickly as they may have felt anxious at seeing these words presented to them therefore wished to block them
