Ionic compounds

Subdecks (1)

Cards (11)

  • You can show ionic bonding by using dot and cross diagrams
  • What do dot and cross diagrams show?
The arrangement of electrons in an atom or ion / What happens to the electrons when atoms react with each other
  • Ionic compounds have a regular lattice structure
  • The ions within an ionic compound form a closely packed regular lattice
  • There are very strong electrostatic forces of attraction between oppositely charge ions, in all directions
  • In the 'ball and stick model' it shows how the ions are arranged however in reality, there aren't any gaps between the ions + the ions are different sizes
  • It takes large amounts of energy to overcome the strong electrostatic attraction between the ions
