You can show ionic bonding by using dot and cross diagrams
What do dot and cross diagrams show?
The arrangement of electrons in an atom or ion / What happens to the electrons when atoms react with each other
Ionic compounds have a regularlattice structure
The ions within an ionic compound form a closely packed regular lattice
There are very strong electrostatic forces of attraction between oppositely charge ions, in all directions
In the 'ball and stick model' it shows how the ions are arranged however in reality, there aren't any gaps between the ions + the ions are different sizes
It takes large amounts of energy to overcome the strong electrostaticattraction between the ions
