Osmoregulation

• Kidney Function:

  • Filter all small molecules out of blood.
  • Reabsorb all useful molecules back into blood.
  • Regulate water balance.
• Within the kidney there are around 1 million microscopic tubules called nephrons. These are the functional units of the kidneys.
• Application, Desert Animals:

  • Longer Loop of Henle
  • Longer and thicker Medulla.
  • Medulla more concentrated with sodium ions.
  • Lower water potential in Medulla.
  • More water reabsorbed by osmosis.
  • Less water in filtrate/urine.
