Aqueous solutions

Cards (3)

    • At cathode, if H+ ions and metal ions are present, hydrogen will be produced if metal is more reactive than hydrogen
    • If metal is less reactive than hydrogen, metal will be formed
  • at anode:
    • if OH- ions and halide ions are present, chlorine, bromine, iodine will be formed
    • if no halide ions are present, oxygen is formed
    • gas tests can be used after electrolysis to test what product was produced:
    • chlorine bleaches damp litmus paper
    • hydrogen makes squeaky pop with lit splint
    • oxygen will relight glowing splint
