    Volume eg forte, piano crescendo and diminuendo

    How it is played eg staccato, legato, accents

    Speed eg Allegro (fast), andante (walking), Largo (slow) and change in speed eg accelerando, ritornello, ritenuto, rallentando, pause marks rubato (flexibility / pulling of time)
  • What is tonality?
    Major, minor
  • What is character?
    Happy, joyful, dolce(sweetly) cantabile (singing, flowing), lively, sad, mysterious etc.

    1. Strong melodic ideas, often copied/ passing between parts. Fugue style
    2. Using a limited range of keyboard, not often big leaps.
    3. Ornamentation
    4. Terraced dynamics (direct dynamic changes, not gradual)
    5. Absence of dramatic dynamic change
    6. Absence of rubato
    7. Absence of a sustain pedal
