What is active transport?
The movement from particles from an area of lower concentration to higher concentration, requiring ATP
Why is active transport an active process?
It requires ATP
Why is energy needed for active transport?
To move molecules against their concentration gradient.
How are carrier proteins involved in active transport?
Large ions binds to carrier protein
ATP binds to carrier protein
ATP is hydrolysed (released a phosphate)
Causes carrier protein to change shape
Releases ion on opposite side of membrane
Phosphate is released from protein causing it to return to its normal shape
