  • empowerment= when staff support service users as much as possible to be independent

  • it’s important to respect and support service users rights choices and wellbeing
  • ~ respect personal beliefs
    ~ don’t discriminate
    ~ communicate effectively and involve SU in choices

  • HOWEVER sometimes it’s difficult to respect one SU’s choices as they may conflict with another’s
  • conflict of choices:
    ~ applying care values and principles isn’t always possible
    ~ right to choice but also a duty of care
    ~ right to confidentiality conflicts with safeguarding
  • direct discrimination= is when someone is treated less favourably because of a protected characteristic
  • indirect discrimination= when a policy or practice disproportionately disadvantages a particular group
  • the legislation that protects service users from discrimination is the equality act 2010
  • ensure anti discrimination:
    ~ ensure equality of care
    ~ follow anti discriminatory legislations
    ~ offer variety of choices to fit culture or religion
    ~ empower and promote independence
  • safeguarding is the responsibility of everyone in a professional setting
  • there are many different types of abuse one can face eg. physical, emotional, sexual or financial.
  • ways to safeguard:
    ~ ensure risk assessments and policy updates on a regular basis
    ~ provide appropriate staff training
    ~ confidentiality
    ~ first aid service/ facilities
  • communication methods:
    ~ only pass on relevant information
    ~ follow policies and procedures
    ~ gain consent
    ~ store information safely and securely
