newtons third law

Cards (5)

  • What does Newtons third law state?

for every action (force) in nature there is an equal and opposite reaction
  • Equilibrium situation
when the forces acting on it are all balanced, so there is no overall force acting on the body
  • Identify action-reaction pairs and balanced forces
consider the interaction between a baseball bat and a baseball. The baseball forces the bat to the left; the bat forces the ball to the right. Together, these two forces exerted upon two different objects form the action-reaction force pair.
  • Distinguish between action-reactions pairs and balanced forces

Balanced forces are equal and opposite forces that act on the same object. That's why they cancel out. Action-reaction forces are equal and opposite forces that act on different objects, so they don't cancel out. In fact, they often result in motion.
  • Describe how objects affect each other when they collide
When objects collide, they will exert equal and opposite forces on each other all the time they are in contact.
