momentum

Cards (5)

  • Describe the factors that affect the momentum of an object

    The momentum of a body is affected by its mass and velocity.
  • calculate the momentum of moving objects
    p=mv,
    p= momentum,
    m= mass
    v= velocity.
  • Describe examples of momentum in collisions
    collision between a person and a medicine ball
  • Use the idea of conservation of momentum to calculate velocities of objects after collisions
    1. Mass M also now has momentum.
    2. The velocity of m is now -v (since it is now travelling to the left) and the velocity of M is V.
    3. The total momentum is now the momentum of M + momentum of m.
    4. This is (M × V) + (m × -v) or (M × V) – (m × v)
  • Calculate the force needed to produce a change in momentum in a given time
    F = (mv – mu) / t
    m(v – u) / t = ma
    a = (v – u) / t.
