• same participants in 2 or more conditions
• Produces related data, each Px score in one condition can be paired with a data point (their own score) on the other conditon
• Counter balancing attempts to control order effects
• Order effects: Taking part in the first condition influences performance in the second condition
• Due to order effects participants may be more likely to figure out the aim and alter behaviour (demand characteristics)
• Counter balancing

  • half the px complete condition A first and B second
  • the other half of the sample start with condition B then A
