  • Puritans long term goals is that James will introduce the Kirk ( and remove Catholicism and bishops).

    As a result he called the Hampton court conference and debate with 8 Anglican bishops and 5 puritans.
  • Hampton Court - High commission
    The court was extreme but could now only deal with hearsay or strict breaches to Anglican practice such as interrupting services.
    Pleased both Anglicans and puritans.
  • Hampton Court - Prophesising
    James allowed it as he believed meeting after service to discuss the bible did no harm.
  • Hampton Court - Removal of catholic practice
    This was rejected as James believed it was important to respect tradition and it did no harm.
  • Hampton Court - Church government
    James denounced the potential of the Kirk as he believed that if the bishops authority was questioned so would the King's (episcopal structure) .

    James saw the Geneva bible's annotations as wrong and untrue so he made the King James's Bible 1611.
  • Hampton Court - Bancroft
    Richard Bancroft ( a anti-puritan) was appointed archbishop. He saw puritans as a threat of uniformity and a disruption.
  • Hampton Court - 1604 canons

    New rules set by Bancroft : the monarch is supreme, prayer book was not contrary to God, clergy ha dot wear vestments.
    If refused to agree: loss of job , 90 resigned which was only 1% of all ministers.
  • Hampton Court - Failure
    Radical puritans were angry as demands were unresolved
    High commission powers reduced = less uniformity
    90 ministers resigned.

    Compromised with Anglicans and puritans.
    Only 1% of ministers resigned/
    Shows James' ability to listen and integrate puritans.
