  • Book of Sports (1618)

    Puritans believed that Sunday's should be for religious contemplation only.
    Anglicans believed that recreational activities should be allowed after morning service.
    Book of Sports said that sports was allowed on Sunday's, this shows James' moderation and his creation of diversity.
  • Foreign Policy
    1610s and 1620s, puritans criticized James' foreign policy for being 'too catholic' as the Spanish match was seen as restoring Catholicism and they saw it as a threat.
    As well as James' lack of support to his son in law, a s a consequence he created the 'Declaration for Preachers' to say that matters of the state could not be discussed in sermons.
  • Arminianism
    • Believe in apostolic succession for bishops, as they were legitimised by Christ.
    • Believed that Churches should be 'Beauty of holiness' and therefore decorated.
    • Though Predestination was wrong and that individuals have free choice.
    • Believed in ceremonies + rituals and saw the sacraments as important.
  • Arminianism Problem
    It was seen as crypto-Catholicism and the promotion of them was too maintain balance.
    They were often appointed as bishops and given patronage.
    Lancelot Andrews was made bishop and apart of the Privy council in 1619.
    Richard Montague was allowed to publish a pamphlet saying puritanism was an enemy and would lead to anarchy by James.
    William Laud was only a dean as he 'could not see when matters were well'
