    -It prepares children for the world of work by giving them the skills and values employers need
         - education passes on ruling class ideology and supports capitalism
         - education legitimises inequality
  • what is Bowles and Gintis correspondence theory?

    they suggest that there is a correspondence between pupil experiences of school and adulthood. For example, they are taught to accept hierarchy at school and work also has a hierarchy. They are also motivated by grades to do boring work - workers are rewarded by pay to do boring work. The school day is broken into small units-similar to the working day. An also at school and work following rules is rewarded
  • how does the hidden curriculum prepare people for work according to Bowles and Gintis?

    through passing on a set of social norms , and values to their students. For example turning up to lessons on time dressing smartly in the correct uniform and working hard to achieve rewards. There is also a hierarchy of management staff, reaching staff and students which teaches respect for authority
  • how did Althusser see education? And how was it used?

    as part of the ideological state apparatus - it is a tool of capitalism which is used to pass on the beliefs that society is fair even though it isn't. It legitimises inequality.

    learning to labour explains the role of youths culture and socialization as mediums by which schools route working class boys into working class jobs

    he said that education doesn't turn out an obedient work force because some kids form anti-school subcultures to cope with school by milking about and having a laugh.

    The concept of cultural capital (language, skills, knowledge, and attitude) to explain how middle class children generally go into top jobs in society. Marxists say that education legitimises this inequality as they claim that meritocracy is a myth, so working class pupils are blamed for their poor results when in fact it is a result of their social class

    • Marxists views are supported by data showing that WC girls and boys underperform in education
    • Marxists also show the link between work and education with the hidden curriculum.
  • what are some weaknesses?
    • However they assume that people are passive victims as it exagérâtes how much WC pupils are socialised into obedience - Willis showed how students could resist authority (subcultures).
    • Also most people are aware of the inequalities in education and don’t think Its legitimate.
