  • What is meant by Fordism and who created it?
    The capitalist system requires large numbers of low skilled workers who put up with repetitive work and mass production, according to Marxists. The ford Motor Company was the first to introduce it.

    They suggest that it is outdated as the claim that society is now postmodern and different to what both the functionalist and marxists suggest

    The education system as class division of labour influence society as society is more fragmented and diverse. And they also argue that the economy has moved away from mass production and low skilled jobs

    It requires a skilled and adaptable workforce able to use advanced technology and transfer their skills rapidly from one specialised task to another
  • what kind of education system did post modernists want? and how did they want students to adapt?

    They wanted an education system that encouraged self motivation, self supervision and creativity. They also wanted to provide life-long training so people can adapt to changes in their work environment.

    They think it no longer exists, and education reproduces diversity not inequality. As they argue that education had become more diverse and responsive to the needs of different individuals and groups
  • What do post modernists think the education system is influenced by and give an example.

    They think it is influenced by Globalisation, for example politicians are influenced by international policies, like the programme for international student assessments and alternative types of schools like the Swedish free school.
  • what has Globalisation drawn attention to?

    issues of access to education in different societies, as well as raising awareness of the experience of education in other parts of the world. It also shows that becoming part of a globalised world means that the skills people need to work are changing, For example IT skills are now more important in education
  • what are some strengths?
    • They have noted the impact migration has on schools.
    • they point out that our education system is now competing to provide younger people with the skills they need for a global job market.
  • what are some weaknesses?
    • However they fail to explain the structural inequalities within education - class, gender, ethnicity.
    • And also they fail to offer solutions for the issues within the education system.
