Digestion and Absorption

Cards (4)

  • Explain the advantages of lipid droplet and micelle formation:
Lipid droplets can increase the SA for lipase action
    This means there’s faster hydrolysis
Micelles can carry the fatty acids and monoglycerides to the cell surface membrane of epithelial cells
  • In a person with a blocked pancreatic duct, (leads to high concn of amylase in blood) starch digestion is affected. Explain how:
Little/less starch is digested in the intestine as little/less/no amylase can enter the small intestine/present in the small intestine
  • Healthy people have amylase in their blood. This doesn’t cause any harmful effects in the body. Explain why:
    Amylase is specific to starch
There’s no starch in human blood/cells/tissues
Starch is only found in plants
  • Pancreatitis can lead to the release of protein digesting enzymes into the blood. This is harmful to the body. Explain why:
Can lead to hydrolysis/digestion of our own proteins such as antibodies, membrane proteins
