  every member of the target population has an equal chance of being selected e.g. pulling names out of hat
• advantage


  for very large samples it provides the best chance of an unbiased representative sample. all members of the target population have an equal chance of selection
• disadvantage


  for large populations it is time-consuming to create a list of every individual if the sample is too small, it could be biased
