• when a current flows through a wire, a magnetic field is created around the wire
• strength of a magnetic field depends on size of current
• you can increase the strength of a magnetic field by coiling the wire called a solenoid
• you can increase the strength of a solenoid by putting a block of iron inside the coil
• electromagnet - coil of wire with iron core that becomes magnet when electric current passes through it
