  • What is a megacity?
    A megacity is a city with a population of over 10 million people.
  • Urban Pull Factors
    Employment. FDI in urban parts of poorer countries provides a range of work opportunities with companies and their supply chains. Urban areas offer the hope of promotion and advancement into professional roles that are non-existent in rural areas. Schooling and health care may be better in urban areas, making them attractive for young migrants.
  • Rural Push Factors
    Poverty, aggravated by population growth (not enough jobs) and land reforms (unable to prove they own their land, subsistence farmers often must relocate to make room for TNCs and cash crops). Agricultural modernisation- less jobs Resource scarcity- may trigger conflict and migration
  • ‘Shrinking world’ technology
    Rural dwellers are gaining knowledge of the outside world and it’s opportunities. Satellites, tv, radio ‘attach’ people in remote and impoverished rural areas. Poor individuals begin to use cheap mobile devices, knowledge is shared. Successful migrants communicate useful information and advice to potential migrants. Transport improvements- removed intervening obstacles to migration
  • Natural increase
    It is the young who migrate and so the Birth rate in cities is high, however improved access to healthcare and a more stable income means people can afford healthcare meaning the death rate is lower
