  • explain the structure of starch and how it relates to its function
it is insoluble and therefore does nit affect the water potential of a cell- so water isn't drawn in via osmosis
it is large and insoluble so it doesn't diffuse out of cells
it is compact so a lot can be stored in a small space
when hydrolysed it forms alpha glucose which is both easily transported and readily used in respiration
amylopectin is branched so it can be easily hydrolysed
  • the carbohydrates
    monosaccharides- single sugar units
    disaccharides-2 sugars bonded
    polysaccharides- multiple sugars bonded
  • starch
starch is made up if chains of alpha glucose monomers bonded by glycosidic bonds, formed via condensation reactions
it is never found in animal cells, instead glycogen serves the same role
