• Connotation - ideas linked to words or phrases (red symbolises...)
• Antithesis- a person or thing that is the direct opposite of someone or something else (love, hate)
• Colloquialism - the use of informal words
• Anaphora - the repetition of the word or phrase at the beginning of a series of sentences/ phrases
• Hyperbole - exaggerated statement
• Oxymoron - 2 contrasting ideas combine for dramatic effect
• Foreshadowing - warning or indication of future event
• Juxtaposition - 2 things placed together with contrasting effect (it was great, it was awful)
• Irony - saying the opposite of what's true/real
• Metephor - figure of speech where you say something is something else (the curtain fog)
• Simile - figure of speech comparing one thing to another using "like" or "as" (mollys hair was as hard as straw)
• Personification - giving human characteristics to something non-human to create imagery (the stairs groaned)
• Pathetic fallacy - giving human emotions to something that isn't human, usally the weather
