National Association for the Advancement of Coloured People (NAACP) - established in 1910, organised many of the legal actions against segregation in the USA
Sit ins - Form of protest frequently used by black protestors, who refused to move until an institution or establishment changed its policies on race
Tennessee Valley Authority (TVA) - A New Deal programme to revitalise the economy of several impoverished southern states through the provision of flood control, electricity, and employment
Eleanor Roosevelt - First Lady, known for her opposition to racism and support for black civil rights.
Mary McLeod Bethune - Head of the Negro Division of the National Youth Administration (NYA) and a close friend of Eleanor Roosevelt
President Franklin D. Roosevelt - U.S. President who appointed some black advisors, issued Executive Order 8802, and implemented the New Deal
