  "though he no longer existed" the soldiers were expected not to come home and would be honoured for it but he decided he didn't want to die in conflict and came home instead but he is being ignored as if he is dead because he is no seen as someone who let his country down.

  "full of powerful incantations" shows how during conflict the soldiers are brainwashed by propaganda and are being trained to be emotionless machines and filled there heads with things other than feelings to keep them in line and obey there rules.

  "to live as though he had never returned" he would have lost his identity if he had finished the mission so decided to come back but he has lost it anyway as he is being ignored because he has let his country down.

  "A shaven head" refers to the rituals that took place to show their readiness and dedication which is partly taking away his identity as all the soldiers now look the same.
