  • Consistent pay checks
  • guaranteed/secure work
  • prove patriotism to USA
  • Food, shelter etc
• 1940, 63% of 11 million foreign-born residents were naturalised citizens
• American sympathy over Japanese brutality in China, led to the China Exclusion Act 1882 being repealed in 1943.
• Chinese people could emigrate to US and long-term Chinese citizens were granted citizenship.
• Few German and Italian Americans were mistreated
• Assimilation (Understanding of culture and standards) decreased resentment. This was facilitated by:

  • Shared mass culture of radio and sport
  • Depression Era suffering
  • Unionisation (working class solidarity)
