• Can give us solid guidelines and rules to follow
• We can be judged by our compliance of the rules

  if we break the rules then this gives us the justification for punishing offenders
• most people tend to follow (knowingly or unknowingly) one naturalist theory or another

  many principles of the UK law are utilitarian in character
