London Riots - Regeneration

• 2011 Riots started over ethnic tensions
• 55 stop and go searches per 1000 in the black community in Tottenham - more than double the white population
• The catalyst of the riots was the killing of Marc Duggan
• Local people believe regeneration only benefits those with high incomes
• Local people feel that regeneration is imposed onto them
• Most of the looters and vandal were under 20 and were destroying the same low income neighbourhoods they live in
• Due to poor education and a lack of opportunities the rioters had no prospects or fear for consequences
• In the 2010 political election there was only a 59% turnout in Tottenham - compared to a 66% turnout nationally
• Due to studentification youthful groups have little regard and connection form the places they live in, meaning they chose not to vote
