Types of LTM

Cards (6)

  • Semantic Memory
    Type of LTM
    • Our knowledge of the word
    • Can be hypothetical
    • Knowledge is arranged hierarchically - we make connections between all the information we have
    • Not time-stamped
    • Not personal
  • Episodic Memory
    Type of LTM
    • Specific time and place
    • Two types: Autobiographical - memories about specific life events, Flashbulb - detailed and vivd memories about an event
    • Could be minor events
    • Several elements interwoven
    • Requires conscious effort to recall (search)
  • Procedural Memory
    Type of LTM
    • Knowledge about how to do things
    • After skill is acquired, you won't have to think about how you do it
    • Implicit - difficult to explain to another person what the individual steps are
  • Where are the different LTM stored?

    Semantic - left prefrontal cortex
    Episodic - right prefrontal cortex
    Procedural - cerebellum
  • LTM of HM
His episodic memory was severely impaired (difficulty recalling events from his past)
However, his semantic memory was unaffected (he knew the meaning of words e.g. dog)
His procedural memory was also intact (knew how to tie his shoelaces etc.)
  • LTM of Clive Wearing

His episodic memory was severely impaired (couldn't recall events from his past)
However his semantic memory was unaffected (he knew the meaning of words)
His procedural memory was intact (he could play the piano well, read music and sing)
