    • in May 1970, Ohio National guardsmen shot four unarmed students dead during a protest on Kent State university against the War
    • Nine more were wounded
  • after the shooting:
    • fighting between pro-war and anti-war groups
    • several demonstrations
    • National Guard was sent to break up many demonstarations over the next few days
    • the public was horrified by the shootings, mainly beacuase it involved white, middle-class students
    • two weeks later, two balck students were shot during anti-war protests at Jackson State University
