  • Saunders - Does not see stratification as an inevitable part of all societies. He argues that a society based on social equality would only be possible if force was used to ensure that everyone did their work to the best of their abilities
  • Saunders - Rejects equality of outcomes, so a degree of inequality is desirable to motivate people to complete, AS LONG AS everyone has the opportunity to do so.

    Disadvantaged social groups needed to be encouraged to stand on their own feet, rather than expecting the state to support them.
  • Murray - Government policy of state benefits created a dependency culture where poor people were given no motivation to better themselves
