  • point 1
One of the biggest disadvantages of FPTP is the lack of proportionality that its election results create.
  • example 1
For example, in 2024, Labour gained only just over a third of the national vote yet gained almost 2 thirds of the MPs in the house of commons, whilst the Liberal Democrats, with almost the same number of votes, won over 70MP’s.
  • point 2
When you compare this to the 2021 parliamentary election, which used the Additional Members System, you can clearly see that this system creates a fairer overall result.
  • example 2
For example, the Green Party gained 6% of the Scottish national vote and won 6% of the MSPs. Similarly, the Conservatives gained 24% of MSPs with 23% of the national vote.
  • analysis
This clearly demonstrates that proportional systems are better at delivering a fairer overall result to elections at national level compared to FPTP as AMS attempts to address the problem of winner takes all in constituencies by an additional vote being given regionally which is used to calculate list MSPs being elected whilst considering how many MSPs each party already won with the first vote.
