Th JRF has also identified that being dependant on benefits will make you more vulnerable to economic inequality. Benefits are the support given to people by the government and in the UK, poverty support is set as the absolute minimum someone is supposed to need to survive. The UK government has, for the last decade, taken a more individualisticapproach to benefits meaning at some points, the support has been frozen, restricted or reduced.

According to the JRF this is one of the reasons why those out of work and on benefits such as universal credit, have a poverty rate of around 50% in contrast to the overall poverty rates of around 20% for the UK. What this means is that those who are dependent on benefits are more vulnerable to the decisions taken by politicians who could reduce the help they get and increase the deprivation they experience.
