materials plastic t1

Cards (19)

  • What are the two types of plastics?
    Thermoplastics and thermosetting
  • What are thermoplastics?

Versatile materials that can be re heated and reused again, they are brightly coloured, hygienic, strong lightweight, cheap, ideal for mass production, capable of recycling, long linear chain, soft weak and less brittle
  • Give some examples of recycleable plastics
1)polyethylene PETE 2) high density polyethylene HDPE 3) polyvinyl PVC 4) Low density polyethylene LDPE 5) polypropylene PP 6) polystyrene PS 7) other
  • What is thermosetting plastics?

Thermosetting plastics cannot return to their original shape once they are heat formed, used in electronic components
  • What are bio polymers?

They are biodegradable thermosetting plastics, that are machine washable, and made from a polymeric material
  • What are composite materials?

Composite materials consist of two materials with different properties. Made to produce a material with improved properties. Eg carbon fibre, cfrp, glass fibre
  • What is carbon fibre?

A composite made of a polymer matrix with a reinforcement of long chains of carbon atoms (carbon fibres) or carbon nanotubes, have high strength to weight ratio, widley used in sporting equipments, vehicle engineering and aeronautic industry, overall it is cheaper
  • What is glass fibre?

GRP is a strong plastic, textile that is embedded glass filaments for reinforcement, used for adding strength, extremely flexible, versatile, used in cars boats, tubes
  • What is a smart material?

A material whose physical properties can change in response to an external stimulus such as stress, moisture, electric, light, temperature, ph
  • What are examples of smart materials?

Photo chromic inks, thermo chromic inks, hydro chromic inks, phosphorescent inks, shape memory alloys, polymorph, piezoelectric
  • What is a photo chromic inks?

Light sensitive- change colour depending on light
  • What is thermo chromic inks?

Temperature sensitive- change colour depending on temperature
  • What is hydro chromic inks?

Change colour depending on if wet or not
  • What is a phosphorescent inks?

    Glows in the dark
  • What is a shape memory alloys?

Are useful materials which will return to original shape when current passed through them, such as medicine optometry, engines
  • What is thermo ceramics?

Used in situations that require hard materials and operational stability at a high temperature, expensive used in engine turbines, car brake discs, spacecraft heat protection
  • What is reactive glass?

Uses electrochromic technology to change from transparent to opaque by applying voltage while allowing light to pass through.
  • What is LCD?

Liquid Crystal Display are a form of visual display used in electrics which a layer of a liquid crystal is sandwiched between two transparent electrodes, uses light modulating properties to display an image
  • What is Quantum tunnelling composite?

Smart materials used in touch screens that are made from micronsized particles conductive filled particles combined with a non conducting elastomeric binder typically silicone rubber.
