  • Competence
someone who has the ncessary skills, experience + knowledge to manage health + safety
  • Consent
when an adult is asked for their consent, info about the proposed care + treatment must be provided in a way that the person can understand
  • Cumulative Stress
an accumulation of stress that impacts bodily functioning
  • Efficient Movement Principles
applying the elements while performing a manual handling task will help to reduce physical discomfort/pain when u move
  • Ergonomics
the modification of fitting the task to the person to eliminate discomfort + risk of injury
  • Lateral Transfer
the process of moving a patient from one surface to another using a PAT (patient-assisted transfer board)
  • Manual Handling
    transporting/supporting a load by hand/bodily force
inc lifitn, putting down, pushing, pulling, carrying or moving loads - object, person or animal
  • Mental Capacity
where an adult is considered to lack the mental capacity to consent, elected individuals should be consulted (if it is practicable + appropiate to do so) about what would be in the person's best interests
  • Risk Assesment
a careful examination of what could cause harm to ppl, to enable precautions to be taken to prevent injury + ill-health
  • Importance of Manual Handling
poor manual handling contributes to workplace injuries + work-related ill health imposes costs on employers, on individuals + on the gov
  • Impacts of Manual Handling
acute back pain, weakness + muscoskeletal disorders
chronic back pain w increased risk of repeated injury
sick leave for prolonged periods of time
  • Causes of Back Pain
    intervertebral disc displacement
    bone injury
    strained muscles and/or ligaments
    effects of vertebral forces
    irritated + inflamed nerve fibres
    compromised facet joints
    arthiritis + osteoporosis
  • Traumatic Injury
caused by either an unpredictable event like a car accident, but often is an avoidable accident like slips, trips or falls
  • Mechanical Back Pain
    primary cause of back pain
collective term = cummulative stress + occurs over time cos health, fitness, occupational + social factors
  • Degenerative Stress
happens to everyone over time + is the process of aging or can be attributed to disease/ocuppational effects
  • Factors Contributing to Cummulative Stress
    personal fitness
    abnormal weight
    pregnancy
    clothing restrictions
    not using provided equipment
    lack of engagement w training
    previous injury
    habits
  • Informal Manual Handling
the individual carrying out the manual handling task will need to assess the situation, plan for the manouvre + prepare for it
  • Formal Manual Handling
a risk assessmet tool/document should be completed by a suitably tained individual
the tool/doc will highlight the level of risk in relation to the procedures regularly carried out w in their work area or for any equipment they r using
  • AARR
    AVOID
    ASSESS
    REDUCE
    REVIEW
  • AARR - Avoid

do u need this task/can the patient/service user do it independently
pyjama paralysis - present in the elederly
e.g. over 70s patient who has been admitted for testing but spending most of day in bed, quickly losing independence to their normally indepent life + relying on staff to assit despite being capable
need a lil gentle encouragement to keep that patient focused on their capabilities
  • AARR - Assess

Load - the object that needs to be moved
Individual - am i physically able to do this
Task - what d o you have to do
Environment - is the eviro i am in safe to carry the manouvre out, free of trip hazards + adequately lit etc
  • 4Ps
    Plan - completed assesment?
Prepare - check for all necessary equipment + staff, enviro is clear
Position - r staff + equipment in place, leader appointed?
    Perform - go
  • Efficient Movement Principles - Definition

how we position ourselves to complete a manouvre whether to move an animate/inanimate load, is vital to protect ourselves + others from injury
  • Efficient Movement Principles
    think before u move
feet shoulder width apart = stable base
flex knees + hips, shoulders relaxed
maintain a neutral spine, in nautural curve
keep neck aligned w neutral spine
change position by moving feet - no twisting/stretching
keep centre of gravity close to load
