The Nervous System

    Cards (9)

    • The central nervous system - receives information from the senses & controls the body’s responses.
The central nervous system is made up of the brain & the spinal cord. The brain is the centre of awareness. The spinal cord relays information between the brain & the rest of the body. It’s responsible for reflexes.
      1. The cerebrum - divided into four lobes, each of which has a different primary function
      2. The cerebellum - involved in controlling a persons motor skills and balance
      3. The brain stem - regulates the automatic functions that are essential for life
      4. The diencephalon - contains the thalamus & hypothalamus. The thalamus - relay station for nerve impulses coming from the senses. Hypothalamus - regulates body temperature, hunger & thirst
    • The Peripheral Nervous System - relay nerve impulses between the CNS & the rest of the body
Is divided into the somatic & autonomic
    • The Peripheral Nervous system is divided into the somatic & autonomic nervous systems
    • The Somatic Nervous System - carries sensory & motor information to & from the CNS
    • The Autonomic Nervous System- governs the brain’s involuntary activities & is self-regulatory
It’s divided into the sympathetic & parasympathetic nervous systems
    • Sympathetic Nervous System - 'fight or flight' . Increases heart rate, blood pressure e.t.c.
    • Parasympathetic - 'rest & digest'. Inhibits digestion, decreases heart rate e.t.c.
