  • Nation State
    The political entity of the modern era, part of the West-Phalian system.
  • State Sovereignty
    Independent control over territory.
  • Equality of States
    States are legally equal, with equal sovereignty.
  • National Identity
    Groups of individuals identifying to the same group.
    Can include; shared language, culture, ethnicity, history or region.
  • Nations that aren't states
    Many nations claim or desire their own state but are not recognised as such. E.g Palestine.
  • Kurdistan Case Study

    30 - 40 million Kurds worldwide of Indo European descent.
    Split across Turkey, Iran, Iraq, Syria and Germany.
    Shared language, culture, religion and ethnicity.
    Iraq - Face persecution through violent oppression, with Hussein haven gassed thousands and killed 10s of thousands.
    Turkey - Government oppression, unequal rights. Words 'Kurds and Kurdistan' banned.
    Syria - Denied basic rights.
