1915 Rent Strikes

  • Describe the Rent Strikes 1915
    • As Glasgow's industry boomed during the war, workers flooded into the city for work. There was not enough housing to go around and demand soared. Landlords took this opportunity to raise rents that people would be forced to pay.
    • Three Glaswegian women established the Women's Housing Association. This was against the landlords raising rent. They paid landlords their old rent charges and when the landlords representatives rejected it, they would have flour thrown at them.
    • Many who were striking were vital workers which the government needed.
    • The rent strikes were backed by major Glasgow trade unions, who represented workers in munitions factories and shipyards - which were vital for the war effort.
