  • Compliance
    • When a person changes their behaviour in a public place but not their private beliefs
    • Only happens in public places and is an artificial, short term change
  • internalisation
    • opposite to compliance - deep and personal
    • when a person genuinely accepts group norms - in public and private
    • becomes a part of the way the person thinks
  • Identification
    • a Moderate level of conformity
    • When we conform with behaviours and opinions of the group because there is something about the group that we value
    • We identify with the group and want to become recognised as part of the group
    • Internalise beliefs of the group on order to gain approval but can sometimes personally disagree with some things the group stands for
