  • Coronary heart disease is due to fatty material built up in the coronary arteries.
  • What do coronary arteries do?

    Supply blood to the heart
  • Why is coronary heart disease dangerous?

    It reduces blood flow in the arteries, reduces the amount of oxygen in the heart muscle and can cause heart attacks.
  • Stents are metal mesh that can be placed inside the coronary arteries to open it up.
  • Statins are drugs which lower cholesterol. A patient with CHD might be given these.
  • If a patient has heart failure, they could be given a heart transplant or given an artifical heart.
  • Faulty heart valves can be treated with mechanical or biological valves. If given biological valves, the patient has to take drugs to prevent blood clots or rejection of it by the immune system.
  • What are risk factors for CHD?

    Obesity, smoking, lack of excersize and high blood pressure
