Cards (14)

  • What role does weathering play in river valleys?
    It helps shape river valleys
  • What are the four processes of erosion?
    1. Hydraulic action
    2. Abrasion
    3. Attrition
    4. Solution
  • What is transportation in the context of rivers?
    Movement of eroded material
  • What happens during deposition in river processes?
    A river drops eroded material
  • What is hydraulic action?
Erosion of rock or sediment by the force of moving water.
  • What is abrasion?
Wearing away of material by friction. (most erosion is done by abrasion)
  • What is attrition?
Eroded rocks picked up by a river smash into each other and break into smaller fragments and their edges get rounded off, the more attrition the rocks go through, the smaller the rocks get so the size decreases from the source to the mouth
  • What is solution?
River water dissolves some types of rock
  • What is traction?
Large particles are pushed along the river bed by the force of water
  • What is suspension?
Small particles are carried along by the water
  • What is Saltation?
Small particles are bounced along the river bed by the force of water
  • What is solution in transportation?
Soluble materials dissolve in the water and are carried along
  • What is deposition?
River drops it’s eroded material, this happens when a river slows down
  • Why does a river slow down?
    • The volume of water decreases
    • The amount of eroded material in the water increases
    • The water is shallower
    • River reaches the mouth (end)
