IV & DV

• Define the independent variable (IV)?

  The aspect of the experiment which has been manipulated by the researcher/ changes naturally to have an effect on the DV.
• Define the dependent variable (DV)?

  The aspect of the study which is measured by the researcher and has been caused by a change to the IV
• How do we properly test the effect of the IV?

  Need 2 conditions: Experimental and Control, various experimental conditions will allow you to compare the effects of different levels of the IV
• What should happen to all other variables that may affect the DV?

  They must be carefully controlled so the researcher is able to confidently conclude the effect in the DV was caused only by the IV
