• In Syria before the Earthquake:

  Over 2 million people already lived in temporary shelter or unsafe buildings, often without heat, electricity, clean water or adequate sanitation.

  2.7 million people were entirely dependent on international aid

  Aid route into Northwest Syria was damaged after the earthquake delaying the delivery of aid

  Health services were struggling to manage a cholera outbreak when the earthquake struck

  Building maintenance and disaster preparation were not a priority so few resources were dedicated to systems that could have lessened the impact of a tectonic event
