  • Huguenots
    -Protestants who fled France because of persecution
    -Arrived after the St Bartholomew's Day Massacre in Paris in 1572
    -They manufactured wool, silk, soap, vinegar, glass and paper
    -Boosted economy, cloth trade, fashion industry and invested in the Bank of England
    -7 directors of the bank were Huguenots
  • Palatines
    -German protestants
    -The Foreign Protestants Naturalisation Act in 1709 allowed them to live in England with full civil rights
    -In 1710 they came to England to flee persecution
    -Didn't have good enough skills so were deported to Ireland
    -Hated by Catholic Irish so went to New York
  • Jews
    -Invited back quietly by Oliver Cromwell
    -In March 1656 they settled in Aldgate London and built a synagogue
  • Africans
    -Arrived due to trade links
    -worked in royal households and were equal members of society
    -John Blanke was a trumpeter in Henry VIII's court
    -Catelenna of Almondsbury was a black woman living alone in Bristol
  • Indians
    -Rich in silk, sugar and spice
    -Set up the East India Company in 1600s
    -Traders, merchants and government officials went to India to make fortunes
    -Ayahs(nannies)looked after noble children
    -Lascars(Indian soldiers who worked on ships)
  • Gypsies
    -Set up tents wherever they chose
    -regarded as a danger to peace and order
    -In 1650's government forced gypsies into slavery in North America and Caribbean
  • Dutch
    -In 1630 Cornelius Vermuyden was invited by King Charles I drain the Fens in East Anglia
    -Dutch workmen spent over 20 years draining the Fens
    -By 1642 40,000 acres had been drained
