• Aid


  Help given by one country or a group of countries to another.
• AC


  Advanced Country e.g. UK.
• Bottom Up


  This is aid provided by NGO's in co-operation with local communities. Room to Read and Water Aid are examples
• Commodities


  Things you have to sell. Zambia's copper is an example of a commodity.
• To do with money and industry and how these change over time.

  To do with nature. Think about pollution of water, air, soil, crops.
• EDC


  Emerging and Developing Country e.g. Brazil
• GNI per capita


  Gross National Income per person. This is a measure of how wealthy a country is. It is usually expressed in US$ so countries can be compared
• Human Development Index


  A development indicator. Ranges from 0-1. 0 is low development. It uses data about health, wealth and education.
• LIDC


  Low Income Developing Country e.g. Zambia/Tanzania
• Millennium Development Goals


  Targets set by 189 countries in an attempt to cut world poverty in half by 2015. Examples include reducing poverty, HIV rates and improving maternal health and gender equality.
• Political Unrest


  When a country has conflict due to the way the country is run by the government. More likely in LIDC's and EDC's than AC's
• Post-Independence


  When a country is free to govern itself after being ruled by another country. A lot of Great Britain's Commonwealth Countries were given Independence e.g. Zambia
• Rostow's Model


  5 stages of development. LIDC's in stage 1 or 2. EDC's in stage 3 or 4. AC's in stage 5
• Social Development


  To do with people and how their lives are affected in good and bad ways
• Trans National Company


  A company with its headquarters in an Advanced Country and it factories in EDC's or LIDC's. An example is Nike
• Top Down


  Development funded by the government or a large organisation like the World Bank. The Kariba Dam is an example
• Uneven development


  How different countries progress at different rates. The AC's develop faster than LIDC's
