Part 5: Summary - Use Behaviour Modification in Sport/Ex

Cards (7)

  • Summary: Use Behaviour Modification in Sport/Exercise (Key Point:)
    • Beh. Mod. (eg, reinforcement) is only ONE variable influencing behaviour… don’t expect 100% changes in behaviour (ie., it is complex: B = f [P x E] )
    • Work on principle that we are predicting the future
    • Is just one part of the experience
  • Summary: Use Behaviour Modification in Sport/Exercise (Key Point:)
    1. Reinforce/Punish immediately & contingent
    2. Be consistent across behaviours, players, & time
  • Summary: Use Behaviour Modification in Sport/Exercise (Key Point:)
    • Reinforce/Punish immediately & contingent
    • Punish behaviour not person
    • That they connect the reward/punishment to a behaviour (contingent)
    • So can avoid or repeat in the future
    • If don’t connect dots not effective
  • Summary: Use Behaviour Modification in Sport/Exercise (Key Point:)
    • Be consistent across behaviours, players, & time
    • Consistent across behaviour
    • Particular behaviour has a particular reward/punishment
    • Across players, same treatment across players
  • Summary: Use Behaviour Modification in Sport/Exercise (Key Point:)
    • Behaviour modification works for those that want to change & only work if follow key guidelines
    • If is specific
    • Contingent - they can connect the dots
    • Does it matter to the person (receiving reward)
    • May get unintended consequences otherwise
    • Punish behaviour not the person
    • “Care not fear” - doing it from a good place where you’re trying to help
  • Behaviour Modification (eg reinforcement)
    • Reinforcers  →  Extrinsic Rewards  (Extrinsic Motivation)
    • Outside of you as a participant
    • Can have an influence on a person’s intrinsic motivation
    • Extrinsic Rewards → Intrinsic Motivation  (?)
    • What effect does extrinsic motivation have on intrinsic motivation
    • Extrinsic reward can increase or decrease intrinsic motivation
  • Next topic: Intrinsic Motivation & Flow
    • Intrinsically motivation, just seeing & doing
    • Has a connection with flow
    • Connected to levels of arousal
    • Intrinsic later bc/ focus in E part (B = p x E), bc/ extrinsic rewards influence intrinsic motivation
    • As E influences p
