  • PET scans have been used to identify which brain areas were active during a visual processing task. When participants (with connected brains) were asked to attend to the whole elements of an image, regions of the right hemisphere were much more active. When required to focus on finer details, areas in the left hemisphere tended to dominate.
  • Sperry’s research has issues with generalisability :
    1. Split brain participants compared to a neurotypical control group
    2. No control over confounding variables
  • Brain plasticity may challenge lateralisation
    Conclusion that language centres are only on left hemisphere. However, recruitment of homogenous areas as shown evidence of the existense of language streams on the right hemisphere
