development of the periodic table

Cards (13)

  • How are elements in the modern periodic table organised ?
    atomic number
  • what are the groups on the periodic table?

verticle columns (GROUP 1-7 and 0)
  • What are group 1 elements called ?

    alkali metals
  • What are the group 7 elements called ?

    halogens
  • What are the group 0 elements called ?

    nobel gases
  • Where are the metals found in the periodic table?

    Left-hand side
  • Where are the non-metals found in the periodic table?
    right-hand side
  • How did Newlands order elements ?

    atomic weight/mass
  • What was Newlands law of octaves?

every eight element was placed into the same groups
  • Give 3 problems with Newlands' approach to making the periodic table?

1)new elements were discoverd that didn't fit his pattern 2)Some elements were grouped together that had diferent chemical properties 3)The pattern only worked up to calcium but not elements heavier than this
  • How did Mendeleev order elements?

Atomic weight/mass but he switched some elements if it made more sense to group them
  • Why was Mendeleevs' table accepted scientifically?

he left gaps for undiscoverd elements and predicted their properties. When they were discoverd the properties were as he predicted.
  • Which group was not present in Mendeleevs table and why?

Group 0 nobel gases. They're inert so really hard vto detect
